Fish Market: The Soul of the Sea, the Rhythm of Fish

A Millenary Dialogue Between Community, Street, and Substance

In the pulsing heart of Tanzania, the Dar es Salaam fish market stands as the focal point of the entire nation’s commercial coastal fishing. “Fish Market” is a deep visual investigation that documents life within this monumental complex, built years ago with the support of the Japanese government. Through my lens, the five great open-air structures that make up the market become the stage for a collective ritual: from the frenzy of the auction for street vendors to the meticulous cleaning of the catch, to the kitchens where food is prepared to feed the army of workers who animate this place. I wanted to document the resilience of a people who transform the raw material of the ocean into dignity, trade, and subsistence.
