The Faithful in the Shadow of Abandonment

February 28, 2013: Visual Chronicle of an Event That Shook the Throne of Saint Peter – between Astonishment, Faith and the Humanity of a Pope

The news of Pope Benedict XVI's abdication caught the world by surprise, marking a historic break that had not occurred since the distant year of 1294, with the “great refusal” of Celestine V. On February 28, 2013, Joseph Ratzinger left the papal throne for health reasons, declaring himself “no longer equal” to the role. “The Faithful in the Shadow of Abandonment” is a profound visual investigation carried out within the walls of Vatican City, where awe mixes with disbelief. Through my lens, I documented the reaction of the faithful and tourists to a gesture that called into question the very perception of the papal figure, traditionally tied to sacrifice until the very last breath.
