The Soul of Tea: Tradition and Ritual in the Lands of Vietnam

A Visual Journey Through the Mists of the North

In Vietnam, tea processing is not just a production process, but an ancient ritual that unites rural knowledge with an almost sacred artisanal precision. In this photographic reportage, I followed the leaves' journey from the mountainous regions of Ha Giang and Thai Nguyen to the final processing. In these lands, where the morning mist and altitude create a suspended atmosphere, photography becomes the tool for documenting a subtle balance between man, land and climate.

The Grammar of Gesture: A Visual Narrative
  • Il Momento della Raccolta: The images capture the delicacy of the first gesture: hand-picking at dawn. I wanted to focus the lens on the tenderest buds and on the precision of the pickers' hands, often wrapped in the morning humidity. Every shot seeks to convey the freshness of the plant and respect for a nature that dictates the rhythms of human labor.

  • The Transformation of Matter: The research then moves indoors, among bamboo mats and large woks. The photographs document the stages of withering and rolling, where the heat and movement of hands transform the color and aroma of the leaves. The raking light in the processing rooms enhances the texture of the leaves and the steam, creating a visual narrative that is at once documentary and painterly.

  • Lotus Tea: A Silent Secret: A part of the project is dedicated to the rarity of lotus tea. Through close, intimate shots, I documented the moment when the tea is placed inside fresh flowers overnight. It is an almost invisible passage that photography allows one to reveal, celebrating the patience and delicacy of an aroma born of rest.

Witnessing a Slow and Respectful Process

Creating this photographic project about tea in Vietnam meant immersing myself in a culture of patience. Forgoing the frenzy of movement, I chose to use photography to highlight the slowness of this process, where every leaf becomes a profound sensory experience. My commitment was to translate into images the artisanal dedication of a people who, even today, transform a natural element into a universal cultural heritage.
