Queen Bufalina D.O.P.: Roots, Flavors and Traditions of Vesuvius

A Photographic Dialogue Between History, Territory, and Neapolitan Identity

The history of pizza has ancient roots, but it found its consecration when Raffaele Esposito, in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, created a combination of flavors that evoked the colors of the Italian flag. “Queen Bufalina D.O.P.” is a deep visual investigation exploring the pinnacle of our culinary heritage. From the extremely fertile slopes of Vesuvius, the birthplace of the piennolo (D.O.P. since 2009), to the lands of the Caserta area, where the only buffalo mozzarella recognized by the European D.O.P. mark is born, my lens sought the soul of the ingredients that make this dish a universal treasure. Completing this symphony are olive oil from the south and fragrant basil, children of a mild climate and a generous land.

A Visual Narrative between Land and Craftsmanship
  • The Aesthetics of Matter: Between Fire and Sea Salt: The photographic research focuses on the sensory physicality of the ingredients. I worked on contrasts of material: the sheen of the mozzarella, the red flesh of the Vesuvian tomatoes, and the texture of the flour. Every shot seeks to convey the fragrance of freshly harvested produce, isolating the gestures of the master cheesemakers and farmers. The light enhances the purity of the raw material, transforming the fruit of the land into an aesthetic icon where photographic technique celebrates the best our territory has to offer.

  • The Reportage of Belonging: Feeling One's Own Land: As a Neapolitan, this experience allowed me to discover how much love and dedication are needed for the land to grant us its fruits. The camera became the tool for exploring the places of my land, breathing in the scent of its produce, and witnessing firsthand processing techniques handed down with pride from generation to generation. This is not just food photography, but an anthropological account of the symbiosis between a people and their own gastronomic identity.

  • The Power of the Single Shot: Crystallizing Excellence: Entrusting the narrative exclusively to still photography, I wanted to celebrate the value of contemplation. Without the aid of video, every image forces the observer to linger on detail: a drop of milk, the sheen on the skin of a piennolo tomato, or the skill of manual craftsmanship. The purity of the photographic language allows pure emotion to be isolated, elevating the documentation of excellence into a timeless, poetic visual experience.

Documenting the Invisible Behind Taste

Creating “Queen Bufalina D.O.P.” meant immersing myself in the authentic soul of my land. This photographic reportage was born from the need to offer an honest testimony to an excellence that defines Italian identity around the world. My commitment was to place technique at the service of a visceral narrative, celebrating not only a pizza worthy of a Queen, but above all the people and the land: the true, tireless protagonists of this eternal story of excellence, passion, and pride.
