In the heart of the Apuan Alps, man has challenged the mountain for centuries to extract the earth’s “white heart”. “L’uomo e la Pietra” is a profound visual investigation into the Carrara marble quarries, a place where the beauty of future art is born from labor, dust and the noise of machinery. Through this project, I wanted to document the metamorphosis of the landscape and the resilience of the quarrymen, keepers of an ancient knowledge that turns rock into history.
The lens moved between the sharp cuts of the quarries, seeking to convey the sacredness of an environment where every extracted block is the result of a silent, constant struggle against gravity.
The Aesthetics of White Geometry: The photographic research focuses on the volumes and perspectives created by the cuts in the quarries. Marble becomes a natural architectural element: I worked on the contrasts between the pure white of the stone and the deep shadows of the ravaneti (marble waste heaps), isolating the gestures of the quarrymen who appear small, yet decisive, in the face of the immensity of the mountain. Every shot is a reflection on the indelible mark that man leaves on nature.
Aerial Perspectives: The Quarry from Above: L’uso del drone è stato fondamentale per restituire la scala monumentale del sito. Le riprese aeree permettono di osservare le cave come ferite bianche nel verde delle montagne, rivelando le incredibili geometrie dei piazzali di estrazione e i percorsi tortuosi dei mezzi pesanti. Questa prospettiva distaccata offre una visione metafisica del territorio, trasformando il cantiere in un’opera d’arte ambientale.
Video Storytelling: Il Battito della Montagna: La componente video completa il racconto restituendo la dimensione sensoriale delle cave. Attraverso un montaggio curato, ho raccolto il rimbombo delle esplosioni controllate, il grido delle macchine da taglio e il respiro faticoso della montagna. Il video permette allo spettatore di immergersi completamente nell’atmosfera delle Apuane, trasformando la documentazione in un’esperienza viscerale e immersiva.
Creating “L’uomo e la Pietra” ha significato confrontarsi con una realtà fatta di polvere e giganti di roccia. L’integrazione tra fotografia, video e drone stems from the need to offer a complete testimony to a heritage unique in the world. My commitment was to put technology at the service of an honest narrative, one that celebrated not only marble as a noble material, but above all man, the true protagonist of this eternal struggle with stone.
