The port of Salerno, a place of exchange and departure, periodically becomes the stage for one of the greatest tests of dignity of our time. “Sbarco a Salerno” is a profound visual investigation documenting the arrival of migrants on the coasts of Campania. Through my lens, the pier ceases to be logistical infrastructure and becomes the thin boundary between the abyss of the sea and the possibility of a future. I wanted to document the vulnerability of those who defied the unknown, crystallizing in the shots the tension of the rescue operations and the bewilderment in their eyes, transforming the news event into a universal reflection on human resilience.
The Aesthetics of Truth: Gazes and Horizons: The photographic research focuses on the face as a map of untold stories. I worked with tight framing to capture the depth in the eyes of those who have seen the unspeakable: the exhaustion of the children and the wounded pride of the men. Every shot conveys reality without filters, where the contrast between the blue of the sea and the gold of the thermal blankets becomes the sole visual symbol of a salvation just reached.
The Reportage of Contact: The Hand that Welcomes: In this story, the camera documents the precise instant of contact. I sought to isolate gestures of care: a hand extended to help someone off the boat, an embrace between survivors, or the first contact with dry land. The Power of the Single Shot: Crystallizing the Zero Instant: Entrusting the narrative exclusively to still photography, I wanted to suspend the chaos of the port to make room for reflection. Without the aid of sound or video, every image forces the observer to confront the silence of those who have lost everything but their lives. The purity of photographic language allows one to isolate the detail — a pair of worn-out shoes or an identification number — transforming the event into an icon of contemporary history.
Creating this reportage in Salerno meant confronting the full weight of reality. This photographic work stems from the need to offer an honest and necessary testimony about a phenomenon that cannot be reduced to statistics. My commitment was to put the technique at the service of a visceral story, one that celebrated not only survival, but above all the human being: the true, fragile, and immense protagonist of this eternal search for solid ground.
